Use Modern Gesso for Fresco

A helpful tip to add to your painting knowledge.

By Marion Boddy-Evans, About.com

If you are wanting to paint a fresco or egg tempera painting, forget the old recipes for gesso, the modern products work better. For a soft fresco look, try mixing plaster of paris (the consistency of peanut butter) with equal parts acylic gesso that you buy from a hobby or art store. Use a wide putty knife to spread the mixture on a board. To prevent the board from warping, put a layer of pure acrylic gesso on the back of the board.
